If the worst happens to your home, it’ll be hard to recount all the possessions you lost off the top of your head. That’s why you need to keep a home inventory of all your belongings to seek replacement.
Go through your home and to every room and write down every item of value. That includes furniture, clothing, artwork, electronics, kitchenware, appliances, musical instruments, etc. You don’t have to make the list super specific, as older, less valuable items don’t need to be noted. But make sure that for everything you’ll need a replacement for gets written down. Include a description of the item, take a dollar value and if possible, include the manufacturer and serial number. Also take a photograph to go with the note.
Once you’ve finished, put all the notes together in a safe place. You can go physical or digital. If digital, put the file someplace safe, either a hard drive, email it to a friend or family member or put it in a cloud storage drive. If you go physical, make plenty of copies and give them to your agent, family member or close friend. Keep your copy someplace secure, like a safe or fireproof container.
With this list safe and secure, if the worst does happen you can rest easy knowing you know what you need to replace and give it to your insurer when filing the claim.
