As the weather heats up, many boaters are itching to launch their vessels and spend time out on the water. And while experienced boaters may have no issues with how boat trailers handle, they can be a bit tricky for newer boaters. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the launch of your boat.

• Practice as early as possible, or during off hours. It’s easiest to launch a boat on a less crowded ramp so there’s more space to perform the task.
• You have less visibility when towing a boat trailer, especially when it comes to looking over your shoulder. Make good use of your vehicle’s mirrors. Additionally, it may prove helpful to bring along a friend or family member who can exit the vehicle and verbally guide you on the ramp.
•  Once you reach the lake and before launching the boat, release the securing straps and install the drain plug. Be sure to rig a line to your boat to prevent it from floating away after the launch.
• When steering on the ramp, remember that you should push the bottom of the steering wheel in the direction you wish the trailer to move. However, there are only two options, so simply try the other direction if you goof on the first attempt. Move slowly so a steering error doesn’t lead to damages.
• Remember that there’s a lag between the time you turn the steering wheel and when the trailer reacts. Move gradually. Trying to make a correction before the trailer has changed direction can lead to oversteering or the trailer snaking back and forth.

Any responsible boat owner probably has a boat insurance policy to protect their vessel. But even so, having to file a claim before you boat even hits the water would be a bummer. Launch your boat with care to prevent scrapes and other damages.
